Cigars
Cigar smoking is a burgeoning pastime for both wealthy Ticos and foreign tourists. In Costa Rica, a few of companies produce a variety of cigars, both for export and domestic retail. In addition, there are several establishments in and around San José that offer a wide selection of cigars from around Latin America. Unfortunately, many of these suppliers continue to sell counterfeit Cuban cigars to unsuspecting tourists, including renowned brand names like Montecristo, Cohiba, and Romeo and Juliet. Beware of these scams! The fakes are hard to spot (the packaging usually appears legitamate to an amateur), and they are priced very high (which many contribute to their authenticity).
