Ecotourism
is fast becoming a term that is synonymous with the Costa Rican tourism industry.
Hotel accommodations in this genre, dubbed Ecolodges, are sprouting up everywhere,
and there is a wide range of accommodations available for visitors that want
to immerse themselves in Costa Rica's natural beauty. At one end of the spectrum,
low-budget travelers can board at tent camps in the absence of electricity
and hot water, and feast with other visitors at buffet-style dining halls.
On the other hand, there is seemingly no limit to the luxurious accommodations
one can indulge in while in the middle of nowhere.
In
general, all ecolodges should be able to offer guided tours and information
about the area. The most exceptional wilderness resorts, however, are set
apart from those that simply take that label by their undying commitment to
maintaining an eco-friendly presence within the wild-spaces which they are
located. In addition, these resorts tend to help support the surrounding local
communities.
While the nightly rates for ecolodges are relatively reasonable, it is important to remember that the cost increases significantly when trying to get to these remote sections of the country. Getting there can require transportation by boat or plane or both.
