Airways / Domestic Flights

Considering
its convoluted topography and the poor condition of some of Costa Rica's main
thoroughfares, domestic flights are a sensible and popular means of travel
within the country. For the price of a domestic flight, an entire day to road
travel can be readily exchanged with a 30-minute journey by plane.
SANSA and Travelair are the major domestic airlines. These planes travel to all major destinations within the isthmus for competitive fares.
Travelair has a maximum luggage allowance of 25 kilos per passenger, and charges $15 each way for oversize items like surfboards or bikes. SANSA allows 12 kilos per passenger and charges $7 for oversized items.
SANSA
Throughout the year, SANSA offers daily service from San José to the following destinations. Round-trip fares range from US$88 for shorter, more popular flights to US$132 for flights to remote destinations. One-way fares are half the price of a round-trip ticket.

There are a number of companies that offer private charter planes. The costs depend on the number of passengers, plus landing fees and the time the pilot waits for the return trip.
